Cell Sorting has become an invaluable resource to a wide variety of research programs because it enables the rapid purification of well-defined cell subsets for further experimental manipulation. Modern high speed cell sorters by design produce defined droplets by forcing cells under high pressure, through a small diameter nozzle, but may produce high concentrations of aerosols in the event of a partial nozzle obstruction. Therefore, cell sorters are considered a laboratory procedure hazard, due the potential for aerosol production. The flow cytometry community has been active in the development of biosafety Standards for cell sorters. An overview of these Standards as well as their practical applications will be presented with the goal to provide a better understanding of the biosafety aspects of this technology.
