Drs. Lisa Hensley and Reed Johnson, both of whom are Associate Directors at the NIAID Integrated Research Facility in Frederick, MD. Will Present on: “COVID-19: Bedside to Bench and Back, Clinical Trials and Animal Models”

COVID-19 is the most socio-economically impactful disease of the last 120 years. Global efforts are underway to stop the spread of the virus, develop countermeasures, and understand pathogenesis. Development of countermeasures must be rigorous to prove safety and efficacy of possible treatments and vaccines. Human clinical trials of vaccines and therapies are underway.  However, pathogenesis studies in humans are often limited due to their invasive nature and possibly harmful consequences, therefore animal models are essential to understand pathogenesis.  Pathogenesis can be studied using established radiology technologies such as positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT). Such technologies provide advantages such as non-invasive serial sampling to evaluate disease progression. The NIAID Integrated Research Facility at Ft. Detrick has used CT and PET/CT to evaluate SARS-CoV-2 induced disease in nonhuman primate and hamsters; such experiments have demonstrated correspondence to human disease, furthering models of COVID-19.
