2) Identify existing federal guidance documents addressing cybersecurity that can be applied to research and biomedical laboratories

3) Explain basic access restriction, vulnerability, and data accessibility cyberbiosecurity needs to organizational IT staff

Presentation Details:

Increasing reliance on the internet and technology in research and biomedical laboratories has opened these organizations up to increased focus for cyberattacks. These attacks may be perpetrated by external actors or individuals internal to the organization (purposefully or accidentally) and can take advantage of a lack of knowledge by research staff about phishing, access control best practices, and network security especially of research instrumentation, automated laboratory equipment, and building automation and control systems that may be connected to the internet/cloud. This talk will introduce the types of cyberthreats that have been commonly perpetrated against research and biomedical organizations. We will discuss existing federal guidance documents from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Federal Select Agent Program (FSAP) that address critical infrastructure cybersecurity and information systems security controls. Finally, we will explain some best practices relating to identity management and access control, awareness and training, and device security to give biorisk management and laboratory personnel a better working understanding of cyberbiosecurity. The goal of this talk is to provide a framework to facilitate better conversations between laboratory and biorisk management staff and their organization’s IT staff to promote cyberbiosecurity in their facilities.

Dr. Julianne L. Baron is a distinguished safety professional with extensive experience in biosafety, biorisk management, emergency preparedness and planning, safety training, and regulatory compliance across academia, industry, and consultancy. She is the President of Science and Safety Consulting, LLC, which she founded in May 2020. In her role, Dr. Baron assesses and identifies gaps in laboratory biorisk management systems, focusing on biosafety, biosecurity, cyberbiosecurity, physical security, and data integrity, in accordance with ISO 35001, the Federal Select Agent Program, and other national and international best practices. She conducts biorisk reviews and risk assessments to ensure that biosafety and security control measures effectively safeguard sensitive biological data and inventory within laboratory environments, aligning with regulatory requirements.

Dr. Baron is the President-Elect of the Front Range Biological Safety Association and an active member of ABSA International, ChABSA, and the American Industrial Hygiene Association. She holds professional certifications in Biorisk Management and Cyberbiosecurity from the International Federation of Biosafety Association. Dr. Baron completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the National Biosafety and Biocontainment Training Program (NBBTP) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
